Arab striker goal keeps alive Israel's World Cup chances

Sometimes sports and politics mingle, and when they do - sparks can be seen for great distances. One such example can be highlighted by a recent soccer game held in the Ramat Gan Stadium, near Tel Aviv in which a last gasp goal from Israeli Arab player Abbas Suwan held Ireland 1-1 and threw World Cup qualifying Group 4 wide open. ÚÈÇÓ ÕæÇä - ãäÊÎÈ ÇÓÑÇÆíá

Residents of Sakhnin, an Arab town in northern Israel, were enthusiastically celebrating in the streets Saturday night after local hero Abbas Suwan, "Abnaa Sakhnin" striker, scored a very dramatic last-minute goal to lift Israel to a 1:1 draw against Ireland.

The Irish team led throughout the game after an early goal, but an extremely powerful drive by Suwan in the 90th minute found the left side, keeping Israel in a good position in its World Cup qualifiers pool. Israel's prospects of reaching the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany were rescued by this dramatic 91st-minute equalizer.

Following the exciting game, Suwan mentioned it was his first goal for the national Israeli team and added he hoped more will come in the future.

It should be noted that just about a month ago, Suwan was heavily booed by Jerusalem’s Beitar fans in a friendly match against Croatia, because he is Arab. Beitar is widely identified with the Israeli Right-Wing. Abbas Suwan

Saturday’s spectacular goal, however, was the appropriate answer to all those who booed, Suwan said. He stated that the goal was his answer to the racists. "After what happened to me in Jerusalem, it was very moving to hear 40,000 fans cheering me. The goal is dedicated to everyone in Israel. It is time to stop talking of Jews and Arabs; we are all one people," he made clear.

“I thank everyone who cheered on the national team and made no distinction between Arabs and Jews,” he said. “Everyone hugged me in the dressing room because they remembered what had happened.”

In the meantime, an array of fireworks lit up the skies of Sakhnin, where a convoy of honking cars made its way to Suwan’s house minutes after the game ended. Suwan’s father, Abu Ahmed, said he could not express the excitement he felt in words.

“It’s worth more than a million dollars,” he said. “The honor he brought to the town, the (Arab) sector, and the entire country, is worth all the money in the world.”

Suwan’s wife, Safa, was the first to call him and congratulate him on the dramatic goal.  “You brought great joy to all your fans and to an entire nation,” she told him. Suwan’s brother, Assam, said the family was very proud of him. “It’s great pride, to have the entire country talking about my brother,” he said. “You cannot ask for more”.

We here in the USA have been following Abbas Suwan and the Israeli football team and hope that this symbol can herald a new era of triumph through cooperation for the region.

Abbas Suwan's tying goal vs Ireland is an indicator of how much can be accomplished when two great peoples work as one. Thank you Suwan for believing in yourself as an Israeli Arab and to the Israeli team and fans that accepted you as a brother. We in the USA addressed the discrimination wall 30-years through peaceful protest and full integration of the military and of course sports and hope an Israeli tem in the Worlds willl further integrate Israeli society.

This story makes the dismantling of the Jewish apartheid regime even more demanding. Why can't this apartheide regime be dismantled so the Jews and Arabs can live in one state in a democratic rule that has no such a thing as first class and second class citizens. As it is people like Suwan are the second class citizens no matter how many goals they score for Israel. It is the very nature of this apartheid regime that encourages this discrimination and encourages the stealing of palestinian lands by the godless land worshipers who use their Holy book more as a real estate document than a holy book. One state solution can end this apartheid regime and that is good.

nima- in case you were not reading the article, suwan is not a "palestinian national" but an israeli arab. there is a difference so your biases apartheid comment isnt even relevant. read the facts. if he were palestinian that is one thing but hes not, hes an israeli citizen and giving the west bank to the PA wont change that. good luck.

She always rants the same tune, giving us all a headache, regardless of any facts or truth. The funny bit is that she is too stupid to realise that if she got what she aspires to - an Arab regime - she would loose the freedom of speech that allows her to rant like that!

Hey HOWZ life in Yeezrael esschole? Hizbullah flew another drone over yeezrael..did you see it? did you like its color? design?..did you take any pictures of it? because it took many pictures of you and your cousins and uncles. Talking about your cousins and uncles, they are coming back from those stolen lands in Gaza. They don't look very happy specially the ones who were growing marujuana in those settlments in order to avoid the Israeli laws. These little, land gobbling monsters are coming back and you better have some room for them...start cooking some lintil soup, lot of water and few lintils, that way you can feed more of them with very little money.

In my comment I had no mention of Suwan to be a Palestinian or not. Instead I had mentioned the FIRST CLASS AND SECOND CLASS CITIZENS in this apartheid regime and I talked about the possibility of one state solution. Go read my comment again. You see every apartheid regime likes to give some privilages to some of its subjects and then show case it and say see we are different. The ex-south African apartheid did the same thing. As it is Suwan, an Israeli Arab!! and the rest of the Israeli Arabs!! at any time can be arrested and put under adminstrative detention without being charged with anything, but only because he is an Arab. As simple as that.

Being an Arab is enough for Suwan and the rest of the Israeli Arabs to be arrested by this apartheid regime. Majority of the Israelis want these Arabs to be deported. That is how welcome they are by the ones who have stolen Arab lands from Arabs. For these Israeli arabs, unemployment is the highest in their community, the level of investment per pupil is the lowest for these Arab children, Israeli government will not employ these Arabs, and the list goes on and on. So lets not get too choked up about the notion that Suwan is an Israeli Arab and lives better than the rest of the apartheid. Dismantling this Jewsih apartheid will put an end to this evil system.

Dismantling this Jewsih apartheid can end up in a system that Arabs and Jews can live under a democratic rule as opposed to a Jewish, religious rule which has given us this evil apartheid regime. Dismantling this Jewish apartheid will put an end to discrimintory rules and regulations that has become a way of life in Israel. Dismantling this Jewish apartheid will give back the stolen lands to their original owners. This human crisis is the direct result of this apartheide regime's existance. Dismantling this Jewsih apartheid will once again allow the civilized world to look at Jews more as jews and not some gun toting thugs who specialize in land theft.

...a one state solution is the only peaceful alternative...otherwise bloodshed will continue, even if a two-state solution comes into effect.
