Saudi sex-changes empower some, shock others
Posted: 04-04-2006 , 12:55 GMT

A recent phenomenon in Saudi Arabia has raised eyebrows for many and calls for a closer look at the Kingdom's conservative society: sex-change operations. Saudi women

Reports reveal that in 2005, there were no less than five cases of women who underwent surgery to become men in the Kingdom, according to Al Watan

Though this may seem like a small number considering Saudi Arabia's population of more than 26 million, the figure comes as a shock to many in the conservative Muslim society, as Saudi Arabia remains one of the most traditional countries in the region, especially regarding sexuality and equal rights for men and women.

Some Saudi officials have reportedly laid blame for the shocking phenomenon on the blasphemous influences of the West, as well as on "psychological defects" of those who underwent the surgery.

However, according to other sources, the women embarked on the painful and dangerous transformation as a way to overcome the severe oppression and inequality that they reportedly encountered in Saudi society.

By becoming men, the women beleive, they would have the opportunity to enjoy those privileges denied them as Saudi females but allowed to Saudi males, including rights taken for granted in other societies, such as driving a car or even going to public places unaccompanied by a male relative.  saudi women drivers

A new black market for such operations is reportedly flourishing, and those interested in undergoing a sex-change operation are transported to another country (usually India) where the operation is preformed.

The entire process, including departure from Saudi Arabia, the operation in a foreign land, and return to the Kingdom under an assumed identity, reportedly takes all but two weeks.

The newspaper quoted a senior scholar as saying the Saudi authorities have to fill what he described as a legal vacuum by issuing laws against sex change operations.

The desire to change sex is probably less motivated by the desire for equal rights but more by psychological needs. The article doesn't specify if there were any cases of men becoming women...now that would be interesting!

Well I can't blame these individuals, they are desperately trying to live among a society which has no regards to females as being free indivisuals and entities. A first step to overcome this is for the Saudi Govt to revisit it's laws and policies.

This is wrong in Islam, but when push comes to shove, can you really blame these women who find themselves being held back by the mere fact that they're women? The Quran teaches us that women are equal, the Prophet taught our ancestors that women are equal, but yet our contemporaries tell us otherwise. Perhaps we should all go back to what the Creator sent us.

This article makes it sound that the reason for sex change in Saudi Arabia is to gain equality with men. Article completely ignores the possibility of women and even men undergoing sex change simply to RIGHT a biological WRONG. Another fallacy of this article is that , just like women, men in Saudi Arabia don't have much political rights either. Just like women they have to listen to whatever the king says and the government decides. Men in Saudi Arabia have, for sure, more individual rights than women but probably not enough to entice these women to go through such a drastic physical, psychological and emotional changes. What about sex change itself?

While Saddam's invasion of Iran was raging and the war was burning the cities and communities and destroying lives, there was a suffering of a different nature of an Iranian man named Fraydoon. Fraydoon thought all his life he was a woman imprisoned in the body of a man. He wrote a letter to Imam Khomeini and explained his condition. He talked to Rafsanjani who encouraged him to meet Imam Khomeini in person. Eventually Fraydoon succeeded to meet Imam Khomeini, along with three reliable doctors and medical experts. Fraydoon explained his condition to Imam Khomeini who listened patiently and then medical experts talked.

Fraydoon's argument was that he has never felt like a man, his mother had told him that even as a child he used to stand in front of the mirror and put on make up and enjoy it. Medical experts explained to Imam Khomeini that medically, this is possible and Fraydoon is not lying or making up stories. Eventually Imam Khomeini issued his FATWA regarding a sex change that if certain conditions are met , sex change is allowed. Fraydoon underwent sex change operation and became Maryam. Maryam today is the spokesperson of those Iranian men and women who want to undergo sex change

Today you can have a sex change operation in Iran for 4000 dollar a pop. A surgeon has done 320 surgeries in 12 years. That is a big number. All you have to do is to convince three physicians that you really are a person of an opposite sex biologically imprisoned in the body of the wrong sex. There should not be a big fuss about this. The same goes for homosexuality. While there are some who willingly experiment homosexual acts, but there are many of these homosexuals who simply are homosexuals and for them homosexuality is not a LEARNED behavior or a matter of choice. Any FAT WA on this?

I have read that about 40 years ago Imam Khomeini issued his FAT WA regarding homosexuality. I have not seen the FAT WA and don't know the exact wording but have heard from those who have read it that in that FATWA it says homosexuals are not like heterosexual people, they are DIFFERENT. Through my ex wife I happened to meet some gay men who had absolutely no reason to act gay if they were not gays. One was an incredibly handsome man, an opera dancer, with the looks and physique , a cut muscular body that many men dream of having and many women worship. He was married to a woman at some point to please his macho father but...

eventually he concluded that he was a gay . While he physically was strong enough to punch out many men, but he had the feelings, emotions and psychology of a woman. He and my ex wife were pretty close friends and he would talk in detail to her about his personal life, problems in his relationships and...His words, thoughts, preoccupation , psychology was no different than that of a woman. These Saudi women and I am sure some Saudi men undergoing sex change operation should not be confused with victims of social restrictions or what have you. It is as normal as it gets.

I lived in Riyadh, KSA for 14 months, so im talking from an individual's point of view who has seen the way women live in KSA. its not justifiable for women to become men in order to have the rights of men. but it is justifiable for women to be equel with men. every one is to be blaimed for the unfair life stile in KSA, but saudis have to get over it & start making changing coz crying over spilled milk wont fix or change anything.

As disgusting or taboo as these sex changes may be, imagine the psychological trauma these women endure in their country that would drive them to take such extreme measures. The Western culture is always criticized for imposing such trends. However, it is the pressure this society puts on this women that makes them risk their lives. Drastic choices are usually made when all other options are exhausted.

It is quite unthinkable that one can try to change from woman to man or man to woman. It is madness and wickness to humanity and mankind for sex change. You are trying to tell your God that he made a mistake by creating you the way he did. Please can you let me know if it was what your koran teaches you?Or if those on the western world who are doing the same can they let us know if that was what the Bible teaches them? You de base your self and had already created and express wy to hail for your self. May God have mercy on this world.

Having read over many years of the oppression of women over there, I can - to a degree, see the advantages for them by submitting themselves to this type of sugery - but I dont agree with it! It boils down to being a reflection of their society that they see no other way of improoving their God given lot in life!
