Iranian FM: Middle East on brink of war
Posted: 23-01-2007 , 14:14 GMT

MottakiIranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Tuesday that the Middle East region is now on the brink of war. According to IRNA, Mottaki made the comments at Majlis open session where he replied to questions posed by Majlis representative from Tabriz Akbar Alami.

The foreign minister briefed Majlis representatives on the latest stands taken by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the country's foreign policy and its national security. The foreign policy apparatus should take into account the country's individual geopolitical status, history, civilization as well as Islamic identity, said Mottaki.

Meanwhile, Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that US dominance in the Middle East and the Zionist regime's bullying are spiralling downward. In a meeting with the visiting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem, Ahmadinejad said that the Islamic and Arab states should prepare ground for strengthening independent and broad-based governments and restore stability and security of regional states through vigilance, resistance, solidarity and cooperation.

He added that the US President George Bush's new strategy for the Middle East aims to repair the image of the US administration and the Republicans. "The US intends to cause insecurity and dispute and weaken independent governments in the region to continue with its dominance over the Middle East and achieve its arrogant goals."

He added, "The US and Zionist regime have a conspiracy to stir up conflict between Shia and Sunni Muslims in order to plunder wealth of the regional nations."
