Arab FMs see Livni as ”Dracula's younger sister”
Posted: 29-11-2007 , 09:44 GMT

livniIn an interview with Israel's Channel 2 TV, Israeli Foreign Minister Livni said she had informal meetings with a number of Arab foreign ministers at the US-sponsored Israeli-Palestinian summit in Annapolis. She mentioned in this regard that she held talks with her counterparts from Bahrain, the UAE, Oman, Morocco and Tunisia.

She admitted, however, that the Saudi foreign minister and Syria's foreign minister deputy have refused to shake her hand. When asked if she tried to interact with them, Livni replied: "I have never pushed anyone who refuses to talks to me into the elevator...."

Nevertheless, despite these comments it seems in reality the situation was completely different. Behind closed doors, according to the Washington Post, the frustrated Livni asked Arab foreign ministers why they refused to interact with her.

"Why doesn't anyone want to shake my hand?" she asked. "Why doesn't anyone want to be seen speaking to me?" With these words, Livni turned to Arab foreign ministers in a closed meeting during the Annapolis conference. The American daily noted that these comments were mainly directed at the minister, Saud al-Faisal.

On his part, Frans Timmermans, the Dutch Minister for European Affairs, said Livni told Arab foreign ministers to stop treating her as a pariah. "They shun her like she is Count Dracula's younger sister," he was quoted as saying.

Saud-alfaisalThe Saudi foreign minister stated before the conference that he would not shake hands with any Israeli representative during the conference, arguing that doing so would only be a "theatrical act."

It should be mentioned that the Arab states which attended at the conference included Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Non-Arab Islamic states which participated were Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Turkey. At the end, Livni only managed to hold a meeting with Salaheddin al-Bashir, the Jordanian foreign minister whose country maintains full diplomatic ties with Israel.

Palestine has existed, still exists though struggling against a vile oppressor, and will exist again, when the vile oppressor's host gets tired of its parasite.

Israel existed as a single entity during Roman times ie 600 years before Islam. It actually predates that by some very consdierable period but how long is debatable and tied up in so much religious dogma that getting an accurate answer would be impossible. Nonetheless, with the possible exception of Egypt, Greece or Macedonia it is hard to see what country would predate it.

SHAME on each and every Islamic country minister who does not stand by our Saudi Ambassador and stick together & never TRUST the European countries who always treat Israel with soft heart by fooling around with the Arabs. If Israel was honest and good friend with Arabs, she should negotiate peacefully to live in harmony. You never clap with one hand and stop throwing mud at the conference dignitaries. Its crystal clear that Israelis always play dirty games under the patronage of each American president intentionally and the atrocities learned from european Adolf Hitler. There are lots of Israeli jews who are tired by Israel mis-treatment. Live in peace as a good neigbour.Good luck.

She is obviously not Middle Eastern like ALL the Kings and prophets of this region...Isaac came from Abraham and Abraham from Iraq (Ur) She does not resemble ANY one from this region except the strange occupier who is very new to this area....that is the main problem people have with her....then she acts as if she has a say in this region....very strange indeed....I wouldnt call her Dracula's sister though because he is make-believe....Satan's sister....maybe but I wouldnt want to dillute the truth because it is all too important in this "conflict"

  James, London, (2008-03-26 , 10:23) - Reply
I suppose it is inevitable that the presence of an intelligent woman with authority and a reasoned stance on the middle-eastern political scene would throw the Saudis and many of the above posters into a flat spin. If your world view is based upon an extreme Wahabiist interpretation of Islam then proof postive that you are wrong must bring your whole world crashing down around your ears. But if you do find that every preconception you have of women is, in fact, nonsense then perhaps you should consider rethinking your worldview rather than simply attacking the individual who has destroyed your faith.

Stop blaming Israel for everything. We arabs have to grow up and start develop our countries, just like the jews are doing. The problem is that most muslims are analphabetical and extremly religious. Its easy to blame the others, but what excactly do we muslims contribute to uor world today except hatred and stupidity. Even this conversation in the Internet would not be possible without Hi-Tech develpoment- which is mostly coming from USA and Israel ( I know, because I am the only Arabic guy in a big company in the Silicon Valley, USA.

Arabs should start improving their situation by facing their problems and stop blaming Israel and the west. The are no angels in this bloody conflict, Only victims, attackers, and normal people living in fear. The Israeli occupation and the settelments are ugly and should be terminated, just like the blind agressiveness of some arabs against Israeli civilians or jews i n general. The solution is mostly agreed by both sides in many mutual papers, but somehow the situation is getting worse all the time. Hamas and the israeli right wing basicaly want the same thing: holy war. That's why it might be a good idea for normal people to stay away from the middle east. I know I do...

??? Don't compare anyone to Dracula - Israeli leaders seek peace agreements with all their arab neighbours . Not drinking blood and not intersted in it. Unfortunatelly humiliating this woman - sheds light on how much education those arab leaders need to get, and maybe learn from Israel too.

Perhaps Arab countries could learn the following from Livni and the Israeli govt in general 1) democracy 2) non-corrupt government 3) education for all children 4) provision of amenities such as water and power for all citizens 5) basic economics 6) due process of law - shall I continue?
