Gaza Strip crossings open
Posted: 28-08-2008 , 09:35 GMT

karniIsrael on Thursday reopened its border crossings with the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, two days after they were closed in response to rocket attacks. According to Reuters, Palestinian officials said three of the main commercial crossings were opened but a fourth remained closed.

Meanwhile, Egypt's Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the Rafah border crossing will also be opened for several special cases, fearing that Palestinians will storm the border without Egypt’s consent. Some 200 Palestinians have died during the siege while awaiting Israeli permission to leave the Gaza Strip for medical treatment, Palestinian sources claim.

On his part, Dr. Ahmed Yousef of Hamas said that every effort is being made to prevent another breakthrough into Egypt. He referred to the country as a "neighbor and brother." On Saturday and Sunday, the border will be open for the next wave of accepted humanitarian cases.
