Posted: 08-09-2008 , 08:44 GMT

Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-SabahKuwait's premier has accepted an invitation to visit Iraq, in what would be a first since ousted leader Saddam Hussein's forces invaded the Gulf country 18 years ago.

Iraqi Finance Minister Bayan Jabr Solagh delivered the invitation to Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah on Sunday during a visit to review debt and war reparations, according to an official statement on Monday. "The premier accepted the invitation and its date will be determined soon through diplomatic channels," said the statement, quoted by the state-run KUNA news agency.

A total of $24.4 billion in compensation claims had been paid from the U.N. fund as of April, but more than $28 billion remains to be paid, according to the fund's website.
