Growing debate on Mickey Mouse fatwa
Posted: 24-09-2008 , 13:39 GMT

Mickey MouseAn Egyptian Muslim scholar has called for an end to risible religious edicts after a Saudi cleric said Mickey Mouse was an agent of Satan who should die.

Sheikh Mohamed al-Munajid, a cleric who often appears on Saudi television and who is also a former Saudi diplomat in the United States, has recently said that mice were "agents of Satan" and should be killed. "Sharia (Islamic law) calls for the extermination of all mice. That includes the rodents as well as 'the famous cartoon mouse'," he said. He blamed Mickey Mouse for causing people to become soft on mice. He added: "Children today see mice as loveable and "awesome" because of animated shows like Tom and Jerry, and Disney staple Mickey Mouse.

"Mickey Mouse has become an awesome character, even though according to Islamic law, Mickey Mouse should be killed in all cases," Al-Munajid conveyed.

However, Suad Saleh, a woman preacher who hosts a popular television programme on fatwas (religious edicts), told the English-language daily Egyptian Gazette that Munajid's ruling "tarnishes Islam's image." "An edict should be based on knowledge, logic and reason," she said. "Yes, mice should be killed when seen according to Islam's teachings. But it is illogical to deal with a cartoon character as a live mouse and kill it."

Saleh said Muslim clerics should learn to become more media savvy.

Religious fundamentalism + ignorance = idiots ... Today, mice contributions to science far exceed the Muslims contributions... Mice lives are being sacrificed for good and noble causes, while suicide bombers lives are being sacrificed for pure evil causes... Creative cartoon productions are far more entertaining, and far less harmful to children, than the real life videos of terrorists savagely butchering innocent humans, while despicably chanting the name of Allah.

While I agree this is one of the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of... You should take note that the most respected and groundbreaking doctors who conduct these experiments on mice are Muslim. Nice try though.

Again, don't mix terrorists with Muslims. I have seen the video and felt that Sheikh Munajid was talking hypothetically more than meaning Mickey Mouse himself. Anyway, if you have an opinion on something that is fine, insulting and accusing others of terrorism that's unacceptable. We better differentiate between Media campaigns & real facts.... After all, I agree on your formulae Fundamentalism + Ignorance = idiots (and even worse). MH

In America we have cartoon bears, yet people are afraid of *real* bears. This sheikh is so silly. If some friend of his tricks him into looking at a "shock site" soon he will denounce them all and forget about this whole mouse thing.

I suspect the decree against Mickey Mouse is intended more as a decree against Western culture and particularly pop-culture than it is against mice. It reminds me of the scene in 'Enemy Mine' where the alien pilot tries to enrage the earthman pilot by shouting 'Mickey Mouse eats shit'.

I don't get what poitn you're trying to make. Is it that this man is terribly clever and well respected? So what? Mickey Mouse is a readily identifiable icon of American pop-culture. I don't think Mickey Mouse gets picked out by accident in this kind of debate.

These fundamentalists Sheiks are trying to practice some of the recommendations of the prophet Muhammad and the words of his God (Allah) like those in profundity followed the command of the USA president who order to through N-bombs on Japan, like those followed the ideology of Gorish fundamentalism of Waco, Texas and other western evil ideologies, as some sees them. Go to his site in English and try to learn something different. www.islamqa.com

His site is pretty dumb in places. (His ruling on inheritance shows he can't understand basic maths and his explanation of clear and unclear phrases in the Qu'ran would have to rank as one of the most unclear definitions in history) but the man isn't a complete simpleton and the site is shot through with anti-western asides for example 'and we know that they are one of the main reasons of damaging food and spreading the plague, we find it very strange that the foolish people in the west seek to make their children like mice and rats by propagating the character of Mickey Mouse in games, comics and funfairs. Go figure!!' I rest my case.

Sheikh Mohamed al-Munajid isn't a terribly bright man. Read his judgement on inheritance if you want confirmation of this fact. He can't do maths certainly. But he isn't a complete imbecile and many of his judgements include notable asides as to why the West is vile, degenerate and flawed. The Mickey Mouse comment is politically not religiously or legally motivated. It is a denounciation of a pop culture icon not a representation of a rodent. The point (which is clear if you read his statement on his website) is to brand Westerners as dirty, ignorant and stupid.

This is absured! This is why the West has such bad ideas about ISlam. We are becoming paranoid and we seriously require to review that. Calls as such are plain and simple stupid. Islam is a much broader and bigger and noble religion than looking into nitty gitty issues such as a cartoon show.
