 While the Arab world is on high alert in fear of the swine flu outbreak, many Muslims in the Middle East are certain they are safe and immune from the new strain.
Generally speaking, Islam prohibits the consumption of pork because it considers the pig to be "unclean". Many Muslim doctors and specialists have been claiming long before the present plight that pork is a harmful diet. In addition, according to the Islamic belief, consumption of swine-flesh leads to lowliness in soul and demolishes spiritual and moral faculties in any person.
Thus, the news about the symptoms and the infections from the current swine flu virus created a heated debate in the streets, the cafes and internet forums all across the Arab world - will the "scavenger pig" spread also among the Muslims?
A review of some posts loaded in recent days to the internet exposes some kind of optimism among the Muslims. For instance: "Anonymous Coward" wrote: "Muslims are better immune. Did you ever hear of SARS cases in Muslim countries?" Other posts support this view, claiming Muslims will not be infected as they don't eat the "dirty" pork. This is of course a wrong suggestion as humans do not get swine flu from eating pork.
The virus originated through swine to human contact, but today, humans are not being contracted from pigs as the virus has mutated to a human-to-human strain. A single cough of an infected person can transmit the sickness to an entire room full of people.
Swine flu symptoms include high fever, body aches, headaches, coughing, sore throat, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue and chills. In recent hours, there are suggestions asserting the virus will soon hit the Arab world. Some unconfirmed reports indicate that some cases of swine flu have already been detected in Egypt. As always, when such big news spread all over the world, the rumor mills in the Arab world start to work around the clock. The most popular rumor in this regard is that the Muslims themselves created this swine flu virus with the aim reducing the world's Christian population….

what kind of assumption is that!!!!!!!!!!!! this is racism.. just for the information for whoever thought that , among the arabs (arab world) there are christians as well, our religion highly respects the christian religion and the jewish,, so before writing about arabs, just know who they really are and how respectful the true muslim culture is! |

Swine Flu is not caused by the consumption of pork products. It is spread in the air by coughing, sneezing. The current new strain of flu is a HUMAN flu that has genetic traits with swine flu and bird flu. In fact the only case thus far of pigs being infected with this new strain of flu, was in Canada when a worker in the pig industry retrned to his job after a trip to Mexico. This is a case of humans spreading the influenze to pigs, and not the other way round. Muslims and non-Muslims alike will have exactly the same level of risk contracting this disease.

Does this mean majority-muslim countries intend slaughtering all of their cattle (Mad Cows), avian species (Bird Flu), goats (VD), coniferous trees (Dutch Elm)? Go far enough back through a history of disease, and I would expect to find a very long list of names thought descriptive (at the time), but hardly a license to eradicate now. |

I would agree that muslims have better chances no to get this flu, since there is not much pork diet there, but it will reach here sooner or later, it can go now from human to human.
regarding the rumors thing, I totally disagree, not only the arab will raise rumors, every single country does.
Pig is bad, sucks, and disgusting although some of my christian friends eat it. |

Yes, it might be true that one doesn't get swine flu by eating swine meat. But has it ever occurred to one that past consumption of swine meat could very well predispose one to the swine flu virus. That is, one who doesn't or never ate swine meat, has better immunity. Check out India and Africa too, or any part of the world where pork is never or very hardly eaten..you get the picture! |
