A meeting between the American, Palestinian Authority and Israeli leaders at the United Nations is not expected to lead to a resumption of peace talks, an Israeli sources were quoted as saying by a daily on Monday. U.S. President Barack Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas are set to meet on Tuesday at the UN General Assembly in New York.
According to the Tel Aviv-based Haaretz newspaper, major differences over the issue of settlements and the peace process remain, and "sources at the Prime Minister's Bureau as well as the Obama administration stress that it is unlikely that the meeting will result in a resumption of negotiations."
"The meeting will not inaugurate negotiations and will not involve any significant details," it quoted the sources as saying. "The differences on the issue of the settlements and the framework of the talks remain deep."
A source in the Israeli Prime Minister's office added that it has been agreed with the Americans that the meeting will not include any negotiations, and the leaders will review developments in the situation. Moreover, the Israeli sources said that it was also agreed that there would be no preconditions to the meeting.
