Tunisian Cinema Days began last Friday evening at Al Sham Cinema Hall in Damascus with the film Samt Al Kusur (Silences of the Palace) a 1994 film directed by Moufida Tlatli.
The program includes a number of long and short films which will be screened daily until the 30th of this month at Assufara (Ambassadors) Cinema in Damascus within the routine show timetable.
Samt Al Kusur set in Tunisia in the early 1960s, Tlatli tells the personal story of a servant women living through the last days of French colonial rule, as virtual prisoners in the palace of the “beys."
This "exquisite, compelling" (Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times) film is a rare work by a woman filmmaker working in an Arab country, as well as an emotionally powerful look at the role of women in a changing world.
The film won the Camera director at 1994 Cannes Film Festival.
