Eager to connect with a one-night stand, hot-shot salesman Buddy Amaral, played by Ben Affleck offers his boarding pass to an acquaintance at an airport bar and narrowly escapes a fatal plane crash. Adding insult to injury, he and his firm win an award for the airline's "we grieve" public image ad campaign. Guilt and alcohol send him on a downward trajectory, but rehab and a feisty recovered-alcoholic assistant egg him toward sobriety. As part of AA's 12 steps, he seeks out the widow (Abby) of the man who flew in his stead (who happens to be none other than Gwyneth Paltrow and, feigning a chance encounter, tries to help her get back on her feet. But he falls in love with this young mother of two whose kindness and sincerity cause him to re-evaluate his shallow life.
This Romantic/Drama is rated PG-13 for some language and sensuality.
Aside from Affleck and Paltrow, the cast includes Natasha Henstridge as Mimi, Jennifer Grey as Mrs. Guererro, Tony Goldwyn as Greg and Joe Morton as Jim.
The film was directed and written by Don Ross, produced by Michael Besman and Steve Golin and released by Miramax.
In its 3rd week out the film made a nice $2,600,000, netting it a total of $34,100,000.
