A passionate 16-second on-screen kiss between US actress Scarlett Johansson and controversial Egyptian actor Amr Waked in the hit Hollywood blockbuster “Lucy” drew criticism from Arab media commentators.
Some comments included “Egyptian men are known for their charisma”, “Egyptian and proud”, “if I were him I’d end my acting career at this point,” and “he must’ve been in the clouds.”
However, the biggest criticism was over how Waked could take part in a film with a Jewish co-star, especially one who was widely criticised for her support for Israeli company SodaStream last year, reports Al Arabiya.
Meanwhile, some pointed out that the film's controversial kiss received more attention than the movie’s ability to secure a top spot at the U.S. box office, and to outdo popular hits such as “Hercules.”
“The police officer [Waked] does not decide to help Lucy [Johansson] because she kisses him, but because she manages to overcome all his team and he realizes that she possesses superpowers,” he told the Egyptian independent daily Al-Masry al-Youm. “This is why he surrenders to her, not because of the kiss.”
Waked has starred in films like “Syriana” and television programs such as the BBC’s “House of Saddam” mini-series in 2008.
Opponents of normalization with Israel slammed his role in the latter, in which he performed with Israeli actor Yigal Naor, with some calling him a “traitor to the Palestinian cause” and “an Israeli agent,” according to the newspaper.
Waked is also famous for his activism in the Egyptian revolution.
The special effects-laden movie is released by Universal Pictures and was made for a relatively inexpensive $40 million, according to the movie site Box Office Mojo.
Directed by Frenchman Luc Besson and starring Johansson and Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman, “Lucy” grossed $128,815 for the weekend of Aug. 14-19, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. Johansson plays a versatile woman who develops supernatural powers after being kidnapped and forced to work as a drug mule.
It topped the French and North American box offices on release.
