British rock star Sting arrived here Thursday to give two sold-out 4,500 seat weekend concerts at Lebanon's summer music festival in eastern Baalbek.

The pop star arrived on a private jet and was immediately installed in a luxury hotel on Beirut's Mediterranean coastline.

Sting will hold concerts Friday and Saturday in the shadow of the six colossal columns of the Temple of Jupiter at the heart of the eastern city of Baalbek, 83 kilometres (51 miles) from Beirut.

The former Police frontman, who won a Grammy Award this year as best male vocal performer, is currently on a world tour.

Sting is beloved for such pop confections like "Desert Rose," a duet with Algerian singer Cheb Mami.

The "King of Pain," as some of his fans know him from one of his more popular numbers, has been touring the Middle East this year, having already performed in Dubai, Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia -- (AFP)
