The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry is planning a "Poor Cinema Festival" in November featuring low-resource films from all over the world, Havana Radio reported Friday.
“Poor cinema does not mean lacking in ideas or artistic richness, but rather resources and possibilities of international distribution,” Cuban director Humberto Solas, who has directed such films as “Miel para Ochun” and “Lucia”, told a Havana radio station.
Solas said that the film gathering will take place in Gibara, in the eastern province of Holguin, November 6 - 10, and will include fiction, short, art video and unpublished screenplay competitions.
He added that the festival will also pay homage to the post-World War II Italian neorealism trend.
“Poor cinema is born because of the crushing effecting of current globalization,” Solas said.
The Cuban film director said that Suizz Effect company has already promised to pay for the cost of the transfer to 35 millimetres of the winning movie at the festival.
He added that the Poor Film Festival by no means intends to compete with the Sundance Festival under the tutelage of US actor and director Robert Redford.
“We are brothers. We care about Sundance and Redford, and they have been invited to join our project,” Solas said.
“We want (the number of) festivals to multiply. There will be no rivalry whatsoever, we all complement each other,” he said – Albawaba.com
