Doin' it well and doin' it in style: Assaf hits Dubai for first international appearance
June 22, Mohammad Assaf was crowned as Arab Idol's winner. By June 29, he hit Dubai town for his first international appearance.
As expected, Assaf chose to perform the much-loved 'Ali Il Koufiyeh' to his fans. But what wasn't expected was the 5000-person turnout for his performance.
MBC had announced the singer's visit just a week before, where a staggering 4,500 people RSVP'd on Facebook.
An MBC spokesman, Mazen Hayek, said he was overwhelmed with the response to the event. Mr Hayek said the tidal wave was a testament to the popularity of Arab Idol's second season.
"We have exceeded all expectations on all means and all platforms. This is from local, regional and international press. The programme has emptied the streets of many cities across the region each week,” he said.
The buzzing crowds gathered around a make-shift stage in Dubai Media City. Thousands of the UAE's Palestinian community showed up wearing traditional Palestinian clothing and scarves.
It was quite a sight, with everyone singing popular Palestinian songs and chanting Assaf's name.
As for the star, he arrived in true style in a stretch Hummer to find thousands of fans flocking to his arrival. He must have felt right at home!
Dubai resident Rami Samir went to the event with his two children, aged 1 and 3. A former Gaza resident, Mr Samir said Assaf's story resonated with him.
"When he first auditioned for the show he had to travel from Gaza to Beirut and he was stopped at checkpoints," he said.
"I know those experiences very well, and to see that he can overcome that is very inspiring for us. His experience shows that if you work hard and keep striving you can achieve your goal.”
Assaf was gracious as ever, thanking the fans: “I would like to thank you all truly for coming out tonight," he said after the perfomance.
"I would never have made it here without you and to see you all here, coming out with your families gives me great joy. I love you all."
The former wedding singer is now a proud owner of a new Chevrolet Camaro and a recording contract with Platinum Records.
For now, the Palestinian cutie is in Dubai to record a song for Ramadan. But don't stress, as he will return after the Holy Month as part of his first international tour.
The concert will take place at the Dubai World Trade Centre on August 15. Be there, or be square!
