The affluent Gulf emirate of Dubai will launch in January a satellite television channel to promote Islam and its values.
Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid al-Maktoum has given instructions for the channel named "Tibah," after the Muslim holy city of Medina, to go on air from Dubai Media City.
The new Islamic satellite channel aims to project Islam and its culture in a modern way, with focus on educating Muslims about issues of their religion, promoting the cultural role of Muslim women and their contributions to the society, both at workplace and at home, in addition to educating and entertaining children with meaningful programs, explained the Official Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Details of the launch are on the website www.sheikhmohammed.co.ae, run by Jamal bin Huwaireib who hailed the channel's role to "educate Muslims about their religion, promote the cultural role of Muslim women and their contribution to society."
Tibah was "a means to teach the Muslims about their great religion which many of them do not fully understand," said scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi.
The channel will transmit for 12 hours a day in Arabic at first but after being established for one year, it is planned that the station with also broadcast in English.
