Five Arab directors won the European Union Awards for Supporting Cinema Media in which 720 filmmakers from Europe and the Mediterranean region competed.
Ultimately 24 filmmakers won the prizes including Ahmed Atef from Egypt, Najwa Najjar from Palestine, Hasan bin Jalloun from Morocco, al Munsef Thwaib from Tunisia and Nabil al Maleh from Syria.
“I secured support for the script of the film Birds Tower which I previously obtained support for its production from Holland, France and Italy,” Ahmed Atef told the Arabic daily al Hayat.
Atef’s first film was Omar 2000 which won a number of awards at Alexandria Film Festival. He has recently finished shooting his film Luck Game.
Winners in the EU contest were celebrated in Turkey last Sunday and the commemoration will continue until next Monday. The winners met during the celebrations with their financiers -- Albawaba.com
