Hani Al Romani is an outstanding Syrian actor who has been playing theatre and television roles for 40 years. He started his career as an amateur theatre actor at the beginning of the 1950s, according to the Syria Times.
Later, he left the faculty of medicine and joined the department of English literature because of his interest in Shakespearean theatre. He used to play the difficult and complex characters such as Macbeth and Shylock.
Then he moved to the National Theatre as one of the founders. On the stage of the National Theatre, he managed to play successful characters based on some masterpieces of world literature. But at the end of the 1960s, he left theatre because he was attracted to television.
He played important roles in many series that are considered turning points in the history of Syrian TV drama.
Among these series are Asaad Al Warraq, in which he played the role of Asaad, the self-made character who is subjected to the oppression of his master at work. But he manages to eliminate his oppression in the end and achieve his goals.
He also starred in historical series including Dalila and Al Zaibak, which deals with a real story that dates back to the Mameluk period.
Romani plays the role of police chief Salah Al Kalbi, who is subjected to the intrigues and ploys of a young man called Ali, the son of the former police chief who was killed by Kalbi.
Feeling unable to confront Ali’s threats, Salah resorts to Dalila, the strong woman who lives in Baghdad. But Ali manages to defeat them and becomes the police chief.
As a director, Romani has directed the four parts of the work The Al Qishani Public Bathhouse, which sheds light on the modern history of Syrian since independence from social and political perspectives.
In reply to a question about the situation of Syrian TV drama, the director said that the objective vision of the Syrian society was one of the main factors behind its success.
Romani is nevertheless preparing to return to the stage next summer in one of Shakespeare’s plays – Albawaba.com
