Heaven by the German director Tom Tykwer will be presented at the opening of the Berlin film festival next February, organizers of the 52nd edition of the festival said.

Tykwer, who directed Run Lola, Run and The Princess and the Warrior, is "one of the greatest directors of the German cinema", said Dieter Kosslick, the new director of the festival known as the Berlinale.

"We are happy that his first international production will open the coming Berlinale. Heaven is a wonderful example of the creative potential of the German film scene," he said on the festival's website.

With Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi in the lead roles, Heaven is inspired by the last screenplay by Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski, who died in 1996, and was made in Germany and Italy, in English and in Italian.

The festival runs February 6-17 -- AFP
