What’s an Egyptian director to do when his country is hit by political turmoil? Why, film all the action, of course! Controversial director Khaled Youssef was insistent about filming the events of the recent Egyptian June 30th Revolution and requested permission from the armed forces to document the historical moment by filming from a military plane.
During the filming process, the drama wasn’t limited to the streets. Khaled nearly fell out of the plane as he tried to get as close to the demonstrators as possible. Thank God for good pilots because the man behind the controls was able to swoop a different direction at the last minute and save the daring director from a devastating plunge.
According to Laha Magazine, The use of laser beams at the demonstration location almost brought the whole plane down.
Khaled wasn’t alone in his audacious endeavor. Talented photographers Samih Salim, Wael Darwish, Tamer Joseph and others offered their expertise at no expense, using state of the art filming equipment.
Filming wasn’t limited to Tahrir Square; the six hours of shooting covered demonstrations held all around Egypt of people who were calling for the downfall of now ousted president Mohammad Morsi.
Khaled announced that after the success of the revolution, he is now ready to return to the cinema after a two-year absence and unleash many projects he’s been working on.
