Egyptian cinema’s answer to Don Juan, Kamal Al Shinnawi, will soon be back on the big screen after a long absence. He will be shooting his new film “Al Futuwwat” (Bullies) with the renowned actress Nadia Lutfi.

The film, which is directed by Hani Lashin and written by Yusri Al Jundi, also stars Hisham Salim and Majed Al Masri.

Describing the film, Shinnawi told the Emirati daily Al Bayan, “It is considered one of the biggest cinema productions. It explores the phenomenon of ‘bullies’ from a modern perspective, and not from the Egyptian neighborhood perspective in the thirties and forties, or according to Najib Mahfouz’s point of view.”

The film star resembles Hamlet, who does not know the reason for his father’s murder, and hence suspects his mother of being involved in the crime.

But in the end, he finally comes to understand the influence of the neighborhood’s bullies on his mother.

To sum up, the new “bullying,” within the concept of globalization, translates into imperialists using politics and economic means to achieve their ends, rather than arms.

Shinnawi added, “this film will be a big surprise, since it revives the old Egyptian neighborhood Futuwwa, but in a modern way that suits my personal conception. I could be a minister, the way my old age has enriched me with political concepts, and my career as an artist has led to my being accepted by the public.

“I am rebellious by nature,” continued the actor, “and reject the guidance of the director, and all of that was the reason for my boycott of Ezziddin Thulfikar. I think I have all the characteristics of a [bully], yet I am weak before women, because I’ve fallen for all the actresses I’ve performed with, the fact that led my marriages to end in disappointment.”

“Al Futuwwat” is the first film for Shinnawi since turning in an expert performance in the TV series “Al Aelah Wannas” (Family and People), in addition to preparations to launch his fine arts show - Albawaba.com
