Laila Elwi finally gets approval of censorship
Prominent Egyptian actress Laila Elwi has announced that her television drama series “Bint Min Shubra” finally received the approval of the Egyptian Censorship Committee to be aired on local and satellite Egyptian channels. The news comes as a breakthrough for Laila who has been fighting the previous decision of banning the drama and gone to extremes refusing to give up.
According to the London based Elaph, the series had been aired on different Arab satellite channels and proved to be inoffensive to any religious sect, which was the argument of the Egyptian censorship. Laila stressed that viewers all around the Arab world expressed their approval of the drama.
Previously Laila stressed that she will not take part in any television work until her drama is screened on Egyptian local and satellite television channels.
Despite the fact that the actress had given her initial acceptance to star in the new drama “Maraya”, she insisted that she cannot start shooting the scenes until “Bint Min Shubra” is aired placing the director and the entire cast in a very tight spot.
The Egyptian Minister of Information Mamdouh Al Biltaji had recently announced that the drama will definitely be banned from screening on Egyptian television channels as it will negatively affect the religious and social harmony that has existed for many years.
Elwi expressed her surprise at the decision taken by the Egyptian Minister stressing that it was within her rights, as well as those of the rest of the cast of the drama, to be given a logical explanation for the minister's decision.
On the same note, director Jamal Abdul Hamid had voiced his objection to the decision of the Minister by referring to the official statements released from both the Al Azhar Mosque and the Coptic Church clearly stating that the drama was in no way controversial and that there will be no opposition to the airing of the series.
