HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Madonna (news - web sites) and U2 will perform during the 43rd annual Grammy Awards ceremony at the Staples Center on Feb. 21.

Ten to 12 musical acts are expected to be included in the CBS kudocast, a spokesman for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences told Daily Variety on Monday.

Madonna and U2 ``are emblematic of the quality of performers who will make this year's Grammy telecast the most spectacular and important ever,'' academy president Michael Greene said.

Madonna, who garnered three nominations this year, has taken home five Grammys in the past, mostly for her 1998 album ``Ray of Light.'' Her nominations this year include record of the year for ''Music'', the title track from her current album.

Irish rockers U2, who already have seven Grammys to their credit, are also competing for three trophies this year, including record of the year and song of the year.
