Baalbeck Festival no longer 'Faithfull', another singer cancellation
“Following a vertebral fracture,” organizers said in a Wednesday press release, “Faithfull had to cancel her show at the Magnanerie scheduled this Saturday.”
In a handwritten letter, Faithfull expressed her apologies and deepest regrets that her bad fall was forcing her to cancel her Lebanon show.
“I have never been to the Lebanon though I know it through books,” she wrote. “It looks like one of the most beautiful places in the world. I still hope to be able to come one day not to [sic] far away when I completely healed and have my dream to sing for you come true.”
This is the third setback for this year’s Baalbeck Festival. U.S soprano Renee Fleming canceled her performance at the Heliopolis site and Lebanese vocalist Assi Hellani postponed his own musical extravaganza until next year.
Baalbek’s proximity to the Syrian border, and the tendency of the violence of the Syrian civil war to overflow into the adjacent Bekaa Valley, led the festival committee to relocate this year’s festivities to La Magnanerie, a 19th-century old silk factory in Sad al-Bouchrieh.
The festival will now officially open on Aug. 23 with a performance by Brazilian jazz vocalist and pianist Eliane Elias.
Tickets for Marianne Faithfull’s canceled show can be refunded at all Virgin branches before Aug. 30 or exchanged for any other Baalbeck Festival show.
