Merna Walid: I am French Slava, Egyptian Wasilah
After her success in Umm Kulthoum series directed by Ena’am Mohammed Ali, the young actress Merna Walid was tapped by the same director to play two contradictory staring roles in the new series Qasem Amin.
“The competent director Ena’am Mohammed Ali nominated me for two contradictory roles in the series Qasem Amin after my success in my role as Rawhiyyah in Umm Kulthoum series in which I played as friend of the late renowned singer. In the new series I will play the role as Slava, the French aristocratic girl whom Qasem Amin loves and lives with in France until he returns to Egypt. The series takes place in 1902 when Amin worked as judge,” the Egyptian actress told the daily al Rai al A’m.
She added, “At the beginning I thought it was difficult to play Slava but when I entered the studio on the first day of shooting all the fears went away. But when I moved from Slava’s role to Wasila’s role, I made big efforts because playing two contradictory roles is very laborious and needs very big mental and psychological efforts.”
“Egyptian Wasila is a much more difficult role to play than French Slava because the former starts at the age of 21 and passes through many age phases until the fifty when her life ends. This character is full of contradictions as she begins as a gibsy girl who sings at Cairo grand hotels and then moves to the palaces of Arab kings and princes. She becomes the singer who represents Egypt abroad where her character develops,” added Merna -- Albawaba.com
