Najwa Fuad to Lecture on Belly Dancing in Los Angeles

The Egyptian artist Najwa Fuad will leave for the US on 18 May 2001 on a visit to the University of Los Angeles. The renowned dancer will deliver many lectures until 25 May 2001. 

The daily al-Gomhuriyyah cited Najwa as saying “myself, Farida Fahmi, Mahmoud Rida, and Mohammed Khalil have been invited to lecture on the Egyptian Folklore and the most famous eastern dances.” 

The artist added that the Egyptian art heritage attracts the attention of various classes and that she had traveled to Washington before and given many lectures for 18 days. 

“Belly dance in particular receives optimum attention at different levels in the west,” she said.  

The retired celebtared dancer added that there are institutes, schools, and associations involved in this type of dance and there are departments at the American universities for schools in the States carry old Egyptian names such as Cleopatra, Nefertiti etc. “Belly dance in popular heritage in general and belly dance in particular has spread in many European, Asian and American countries including Canada, Australia, Japan, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and other counties,” Najwa said. 

She added that there is constant care in many countries to know all details regarding the Egyptian art heritage. There are also many foreign dancers who compete with Egyptian dancers and their performances in harmony with the eastern music and songs of Umm Kulthoom, Abdul Halim Hafez and Farid Al Atrash are splendid, according to her.  

“The lectures will be delivered at the same university from which artist Farida Fahmi obtained her Master degree. One lecture will be on my art career and my start as an amateur and then as a professional dancer and my marriage to my late husband Ahmed Fuad Hasan who was able develop my talent musically and athletically,” said the Egyptian dancer – Albawaba.com
