Refugee activist extraordinaire Angelina Jolie returns to Jordan
Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie has arrived in Jordan as part of a UNHCR trip to the Zaatari refugee camp.
During her stay, Jolie is said to be meeting with Jordanian officials to discuss the inflow of Syrian refugees across Jordan’s northern border, as well as how the Kingdom has been affected.
Sources say Jolie is then scheduled to visit several sites on the border where refugees commonly cross into Jordan. There she will be acquainted with ongoing efforts by the border patrol to assist incoming refugees.
For Jolie’s final stop, she will meet Syrian families to hear their stories and determine what more can be done for them by international aid agencies.
This is Jolie’s third trip to Jordan during the Syrian civil war. She traveled with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to Zaatari refugee camp in September and December 2012. During her first visit to the camp near the Syrian border, the population of refugees was around 30,000. Today, that number is around 120,000, according to the New York Times.
Jolie has a history of bringing global issues into the limelight, having traveled to refugee camps in Iraq, Syria, Pakistan and Haiti with the UNHCR.
