The Egyptian artist Shireen Abed Al Wahab has raised controversy after she started making the Islamic call to prayer over Egyptian radio stations during the month of Ramadan.
Imams at the Al Azhar Mosque in Cairo disapprove, rejecting the idea of any artist reciting the holy Quran or making the call to prayer since they are both sacred.
Shireen said that she always wanted to make the call for prayer, and she hopes that God and the audience will be pleased with her performance.
Shireen declined to sing the theme song for the Kuwaiti television drama series “Damat Yateem” (An Orphan’s teary), after she had a dispute with the producers of the series over the salary they offered.
Composer Anwar Abdullah made an agreement with a Kuwaiti artist to perform the song.
Shireen did sing the theme song for the television drama series “Al Rajol Wal Tareek” (The Man and the Road) which stars famous Egyptian actress Safyeh Al Omari and Muhammad Riyad. The series is directed by Ibrahim Al Shawadi and produced by “Qita’ Al Intaj.”
