Culture Ministry and the Economic Development Board has announced an impressive line-up of events for the upcoming 9th Spring of Culture Festival. Addressing the Media persons yesterday, Culture Minister Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa said, “We believe that the event will give the people of Bahrain the opportunity to experience something new through art, music, and dance, as we celebrate our capital, Manama, the city of Asian tourism and arts this year.” The festival will last for two months and the programme will include activities of diverse nature.
Art and literature
Art events being held include Five Hundred Years of Islamic Calligraphy, which has already begun and will continue until Apr. 13 at the Bahrain National Museum while Souq Bab Al Bahrain will continue to offer local designers the chance to present their merchandise and products from March 1 to 29 at Bab Al Bahrain. Meanwhile, the Art Market will be held at Bab Al Bahrain from Mar. 13 to 15 and Apr. 10 to 12 and will provide an opportunity for local artists to showcase their work. A Japanese Maki-e exhibition will also be held from Mar. 2 to Apr. 6. Aside from this, the 16th Bahrain International Book Fair will be held from Mar. 27 until Apr. 6.
Musician, singer and songwriter Eric Clapton will perform on Mar. 8 while ‘I Will Survive’ famed Gloria Gaynor’s concert will be held on Apr. 4. Mar. 5 will feature American jazz composer and pianist and Grammy award winner Ramsey Lewis along with seven-time Grammy winning singer and songwriter Philip Bailey. All the performances will be held at Arad Fort. For the classical music lovers, a concert of Opera legend Jose Carreras will be held on Mar. 6 at the National Theatre. The world-famous Vienna Boys’ Choir will also be performing on Mar. 12 at the Cultural Hall. Arabic musical events include the performance of Michel Fadel from Lebanon on Feb. 27 and the Arab Idol talent, Ahmed Jamal on Apr. 3 while Mohammed Abdo performs on March 18.
Theatre and dance
There will be a performance of Eric Carle’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and other kids’ stories by Canada’s Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia at the Alumni Club from the Mar. 27 to 30. Turkish dancing band Fire of Anatolia will perform ‘Troy’ at the Arad Fort between Mar. 28 and 29.
Chinese Culture Week
The Chinese Culture Week, which is organised in cooperation with the Chinese Embassy, will feature the Silk Road Exhibition from Apr. 10 to 19. The Liaoning Ballet of China will also perform on Apr. 10 along with the China National Acrobatic Troupe at Arad from Mar. 20 to 22.
