Syrian President Receives Adel Imam in Damascus
Syrian President Bashar Al Asad received Adel Imam at the People’s Palace in Damascus on Saturday, giving a warm welcome to the Egyptian actor.
Imam is in Syria to stage his play Bodyguard at the Damascus International Trade Fair, said Al Sharq Al Awsat.
“We have produced many films over the past five decades for the Arab and Palestinian cause, but unfortunately Arab unity has not been achieved, nor has Palestine been liberated,” Imam said in a press conference he held upon his arrival in Damascus.
“We continued to be divided and the Arab armies, despite their shows, did not do anything to Israel. For my part, I do not accept the idea of singing that we will defeat Israel, because I believe there are other, more useful actions,” he added.
Regarding the presentation of his play’s scripts to the Egyptian censors, Imam said that “in any part of the world, the green light should be obtained from censors for proceeding with artwork. As for me, I don’t get permission for my plays from the premier or a minister. It is not a heroic act to be against my country, which I should support against a security threat such as terrorism.” - Albawaba.com
