The first festival of women’s music is to be held in several cultural complexes in Tehran starting Sunday, according to the official Iranian news agency, IRNA.

The secretary of the festival, Mansoureh Zabetzadeh, told the agency on Friday that it aimed to provide an opportunity for women to display their dynamic presence in the musical field as well as to give young talents an opportunity to be recognized.

Pointing to the fact that 60 percent of those attending music courses in Tehran were women, Sabetzadeh said that the weeklong festival would cover three sections: competition, side and special events.

She said that in the competition section, several groups would vie for best performance in the melody, lyrics and solo performance categories.

In the sidelines section, she added, several concerts were scheduled, capped by appearances by the Neyriz Group, conducted by Maliheh Saeedi. The group’s musical numbers will honor veteran women musicians in Iran and encourage young performers.

The secretary of the festival further remarked that in the special section of the festival, several numbers would be performed for elderly women, as well as for women inmates in Evin Prison.
