Egyptian actress Wafa Amer has suddenly found herself at the top of the list of well respected television actors after her successful performance in the drama “King Farouq”. Amer played the role of Queen Nazli, King Farouq’s mother.
According to the London daily Elaph, Wafa said,” It was the role of a life time.” Meanwhile, it has enabled the Egyptian actor to shirk her reputation as an erotic actor.
Wafa currently stars in the film “Heen Maysarah,” alongside Egyptian actress Summaya Al Khashab. Wafa plays the role of ‘Nahmida,’ a poverty stricken women living in a tough neighborhood. After several years of marriage she and her husband are unable to have children. She discovers that her husband is the one who is infertile, yet she never tells him for fear of the negative reaction of their community.
Critics questioned why she took the role, yet Wafa asserts it helped her grow as an actress.
Summaya gained notoriety from her role in the television drama “Rayeh Wa Skeena”.
Wafa stated that she will now only accept leading roles in television dramas. She was supposed to star in the television drama series “Ali Basha Mubarak”, written by Muhammad Al Sayed and directed by Wafiq Wajdi, but she turned down the role. She has passed over eight roles in television dramas since appearing in “King Farouq”. Wafa said that she does not want “to ruin her image after playing the strong role of Queen Nazli.”
Critics are questioning if Wafa’s selectivity in her choice of roles may stunt her acting career.
