On Sunday, US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton commented on Israel’s conflict with Hamas, the militant group that rules the Gaza Strip.
“Hamas provokes Israel. They often pretend to have people in civilian garb acting as though they are civilians who are Hamas fighters,” Clinton said during an appearance on the CNN program “State of the Union.”
“I think Israel has had to defend itself, has a right to defend itself,” she said.
In the summer of 2014, Israeli forces shelled the densely-populated Gaza Strip for over a month, causing an estimated 2,200 fatalities and thousands more injuries. The Jewish nation said the operation, which was dubbed Operation Protective Edge, was done to prevent Hamas from launching further rocket attacks into Israeli territory.
Twitter users reacted strongly to Clinton’s words on the conflict.
“Clinton openly, unapologetically supports human rights violations in Gaza. I am literally disgusted by anyone that proudly supports her,” said one user.

“Expect hundreds more children to be murdered in #Gaza, with full support of President Hillary Clinton,” lamented another.
Another pointed out that Clinton has spoken poignantly about visits to Israeli hospitals but not to hospitals in Gaza:
Others suggested her comments in support of Israel were not sincere, but were only made to garner support from wealthy Jewish donors.
Clinton said during a speech to influential Jewish lobby group AIPAC last month that America “can’t ever be neutral when it comes to Israel’s security or survival.”
