Al Azhar student dies after being shot by riot police
A student at Egypt's Islamic Al Azhar University who was shot last week during clashes with security forces died on Monday, the university's student union has said.
Ahmed Abdel-Sattar was shot in the head last Wednesday during clashes with riot police on Al Azhar's campus in northeast Cairo.
His death comes after being in a coma for five days as a result of his injuries, Al Azhar's General Student Union said.
Al Azhar University, along with other universities in Cairo and several governorates, has become a hub for supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi, as authorities press on with a harsh crackdown on their street protests elsewhere.
Several students in Cairo and elsewhere have been killed in recent months during frequent protests that often end in clashes with police.
Hundreds of students have been incarcerated and dozens others sentenced to jail terms for illegal protesting and rioting. Tens have been expelled, also over rioting.
