Bahrain frees 86 Shiite detainees
Bahrain has freed 86 protesters detained during anti-regime protests that rocked the kingdom for nearly a month, the interior ministry said on Monday. "An official has announced the release of 86 detainees after legal procedures have been taken against them," the ministry said, according to AFP.
The opposition said that some 400 people were detained during Shiite-led protests.
The interior ministry has said that 24 people killed during the protests, four of them policemen, while three other activists have died in custody.
The interior ministry said on Monday Ali Issa Saqer, 31, had died when guards tried to restrain him for "causing chaos". Another detainee, Zakaraya Rashed Hassan, 40, had died of sickle cell disease, the ministry added. Several Shia activists have complained of being tortured while in custody.
