Reports from the Mirror have claimed that Real Madrid youngster Raphael Varane is Jose Mourinho's first choice to replace departing defender David Luiz at Chelsea.
The young defender was part of a controversial bust-up with Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone over the weekend as Madrid lifted their tenth European title.
The Blues already signed St. Etienne youngster Kurt Zouma in the January transfer window and see him also arriving this summer, but Varane could offer a permanent partner to Thomas Kalas as the future of the Chelsea defense.
Gary Cahill is already destined to succeed John Terry as the leadership heart of the Blues defense, but Mourinho is looking to ensure that the future is just as bright as the past has been for the Blues back line.
Should Mourinho's pursuit of Varane fail to come to fruition there is also a belief that AS Roma star Medhi Benatia and FC Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala are also potential favorites for a Blues offer this summer.
With Terry looking to have at least one more year in the tank, a move for Varane would be a promising signing for the future of the club, but it all remains to be seen.
