Syria: Arrests in Damascus as Governor of Deir ez-Zor replaced
Activists said Syrian security forces have stormed a northwestern village and made sweeping arrests. The Local Coordination Committees said tanks shelled a telecommunications tower in Sarjeh village and cut electricity and water supplies early Sunday.
According to the AP, the LCC added authorities arrested scores of people in the capital, Damascus, and its suburbs late Saturday. Renowned movie producer Shadi Abu-Fakhr was believed to be among them.
Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday issued a decree to appoint Samir Osman Sheikh as the new Governor of Deir ez-Zor (east of the country). He replaces Hussein Arnous, who was appointed as the new governor of Kenitra. It should be noted that the city of Deir ez-Zor saw on Friday a huge demonstration involving more than 550,000 people, according to human rights activists.
