A fascinating Group A encounter indeed awaits fans on Monday to open the tournament, as defending IHF Super Globe Champions BM Ciudad Real take on African champions Al Zamalek at 5:45 pm at the Al Sadd Sports Club venue. The Egyptian team will be buoyed by its many Middle Eastern fans, but BM Ciudad Real comes fresh from claiming a fourth consecutive Spanish League crown and will be looking to add more silverware to a sparkling trophy cabinet here in Doha. Qatar’s numerous handball fans can certainly expect a thrilling opening game, and won’t be thinking about leaving the venue thereafter either as home team Al Sadd of Qatar take on their namesakes Al Sadd of Lebanon at 7:15 pm. The Group B encounter will be a passionate affair with both teams looking to get their tournament off to a winning start, and it will also be a Middle Eastern derby which reflects the growing status of handball in the region.
“We are extremely proud to host such a prestigious and important tournament in Qatar for the next four years, and we believe that it will give a further boost to the sport of handball in the Middle East and really propel the game to another level. This tournament will give our youngsters the best indication that they too can make it onto the world’s biggest stage,” Al-Kuwari added.
Group A is completed by Brazilian champions Unopar, who spring into action on the second match day on Tuesday as they face BM Ciudad Real at 5:45 pm. In Group B meanwhile Australian side Southern Stars will be attempting to book their place in the semi-finals when they start into the tournament on the second day. Southern Stars will take on Al Sadd of Qatar at 7:15 pm on Tuesday, before the final round of group matches begins on Wednesday. The semi-finals take place on May 20, before the grand final of the IHF Super Globe on Friday May 21 will decide the 2010 champions. Expectant excitement is certainly in the air in Doha already, just before the tournament begins.
