400 plus arrested in Egypt
More than 400 protesters have been detained by Egyptian security forces following deadly clashes overnight in Cairo, a security source said on Tuesday.
The 401 arrests were made in the central Ramses area, where supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi gathered on Monday to call for his reinstatement, and to commemorate dozens of people who were killed outside the Republican Guard headquarters last week.
Nationwide protests by Mursi supporters turned violent in some areas, with at least seven killed and 261 injured, health officials said.
Flags, banners and portraits of the Islamist president have reportedly been carried around Cairo, whilst Egyptian security forces released tear gas on protesters who were blocking The 6th October Bridge near Cairo’s Ramses square, Al Arabiya reported.
More rallies are expected on Tuesday.
