Taliban bombers target US base in Afghanistan
A US military outpost in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar was attacked by Taliban fighters on Monday, less than a week after a Polish base was attacked by the Taliban in a nearby province.
Taliban-sponsored attacks on Afghan security forces and civilians have increased this week, killing dozens and adding to the anxiety of the Afghan people over next year's scheduled withdrawal of all foreign troops, according to Reuters.
Aghan civilians fear that by the end of next year, when the majority of foreign troops in Afghanistan are due to leave, insurgents and radicals will be given the opportunity to gain lost territory, Reuters reported.
Monday's attack prompted the police to close down part of a highway between the provincial capital and Torkham district near the border with Pakistan, a security source said. The base itself was not penetrated, Reuters reported.
Three insurgents were killed in the attack, according to BBC.
Three Taliban fighters were killed in the clash, but no others casualties were reported, district governor Isa Khan Zwak told Reuters.
