The mastermind behind the Algerian BP kidnappings, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, has been killed by Chadian soldiers in Mali, Reuters reported on Sunday.
Belmokhtar, who headed up al-Qaeda in North Africa, admitted responsibility for the hostage crisis at the Algerian gas plant in January that left more than 60 people dead.
“On Saturday, March 2, at noon, Chadian armed forces operating in northern Mali completely destroyed a terrorist base(...) The toll included several dead terrorists, including their leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar,” spokesman for the Chad armed forces, General Zacharia Gobongue, said in a statement read on state television.
Al Qaeda in North Africa had been making major inroads into the Sahel before being pushed back by French and African forces in Northern Mali last month.
