Assad votes in Damascus alongside wife
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad voted in the country’s elections alongside his British-born wife Asma in Damascus Tuesday, AFP reports.
Still photographs were broadcast by Syria’s state television channel of the couple casting their votes in an election boycotted by opposition figures and referred to as a “parody of democracy” by the United States.
Assad’s low-key challengers Maher al-Hajjar and Hassan al-Nuri also voted in the capital’s Sheraton Hotel, according to AFP.
Earlier on Tuesday, Syrian militants vowed to attack voting locations and urged people to stay at home.
