Aziz Becomes First Iraqi Official to Fly to Damascus in 20 Years
Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz arrived in Damascus by plane on Saturday, becoming the first Iraqi official to do so in 20 years, officials said.
Aziz, who met with Syrian Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara, told journalists afterwards that he was making a stopover on his way to China.
"There is no embargo on (Iraqi) civil aviation," Aziz said. "That is an American lie. We are now resuming travel in a normal way" -- DAMASCUS (AFP)
