Lebanon: PM urges calm, President brands attackers "terrorists"
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati called for calm Saturday, hours after two rockets struck a area of the capital southern suburb.
“The aim behind the rocket attack incident on Beirut’s southern suburb was to produce chaos at the security level and was an attempt to provoke specific reactions and this is clear from the timing and target,” Mikati said, according to a statement from his office.
“We urge everyone to remain vigilant and deal with the situation in a careful manner to prevent those seeking strife from achieving their objective,” he said.
“We stress that the security agencies have launched investigations to uncover the circumstances surrounding this act of sabotage and apprehend the perpetrators,” he said.
The premier-designate also called all political leaders to “cooperate to calm the situation at this sensitive and dangerous period that the region is going through.”
President Michel Sleiman slammed Sunday the early morning rocket attacks that struck the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, describing the perpetrators as “terrorists.”
“President Michel Sleiman denounced the launching of two rockets on the southern suburb this morning, describing those behind the incident as terrorist saboteurs who do not want peace and stability for Lebanon or the Lebanese,” a statement from his office said.
Sleiman urged authorities to intensify their investigations to apprehend the suspects as soon as possible.
He also urged citizens to be “vigilant” and to assist and inform authorities “in the event of any suspicious activity in order to prevent any attempt to provoke strife and tension at the security level.”
