Bush Nominates Powell as New US Secretary Of State
US President-elect George W. Bush nominated Colin Powell as his secretary of state, the first African-American to be named to the post in US history.
"General Powell is tremendously respected both here in the United States and around the globe," said president-elect George W. Bush upon presenting Powell.
"His leadership and experience will be great assests at the State Department and he will be an integral part of my administration," Bush said.
Powell, 63, is a former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, and has a reputation as a man of honor aloof from the political fray -- CRAWFORD, Texas (AFP0
