City of Amman Selected as Co-Host in 2016 for the Universal Forum of Cultures alongside Quebec City, Canada
The Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the Universal Forum of Cultures convened yesterday (October 4th, 2010) in Barcelona to vote for the host of the Forum in the year 2016. The Board voted in both Amman & city of Quebec's favor as co-hosts.
In light of this achievement, Mayor of Amman, Omar Maani extended his gratitude and thanked Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania Al Abdullah for their support of Amman’s bid.
Mayor Omar Maani also thanked Jordan’s Prime Minister, Mr. Samir Rifai and the government for their support of the Amman bid
The Greater Amman Municipality commenced preparations for the bidding documents a year and a half ago and submitted its final application in January 2010. Shortly after, Amman was shortlisted among two other cities, Cape Town, South Africa, and Quebec City, Canada out of approximately 21 cities.
A review committee visited Amman in May 2010 in order to evaluate Amman’s urban regeneration projects, its readiness to host the Forum, its public transport systems and infrastructure, and the city’s cultural XUZYU.
On September 14th, 2010, Mayor Omar Maani presented an audio/visual presentation of Amman’s application to the Universal Forum of Cultures Foundation’s Board of Trustees in Barcelona, which demonstrated Amman’s unique qualities and attributes to play host for the Forum in 2016.
The Foundation’s Board of Trustees convened in Barcelona on October 4th, 2010 to vote and select the host for the Forum in 2016, the vote resulted in selecting Amman as a co-host alongside Quebec City.
The Greater Amman Municipality is a firm believer that hosting a global cultural gathering of such distinction and importance will provide Amman’s communities, schools, institutions, organizations, galleries, and neighbourhoods with a remarkable and unforgettable opportunity to be involved in a Forum of such stature. The Forum in Amman & Quebec City will put humanity at the forefront and will look into ways to learn and new ways to think, driving future actions with goals, accountability, passion, and sustainable commitment.
