Dubai Cares receives AED 10 million donation from Sunny Varkey
Dubai Cares, the UAE-based philanthropic institution founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Prime Minister and Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, has received a donation of AED10 million from Sunny Varkey in support of its education programs that aim to provide children in developing countries with access to primary education.
Tariq Al Gurg, CEO of Dubai Cares said, “The UAE community has been extremely supportive of Dubai Cares and its initiatives since its inception in 2007, through their generous contributions and active participation. We appreciate the continued support of the UAE community in helping us achieve our objectives and improve the lives of millions of children across the world by improving their access to primary education.”
Added Al Gurg, “We are extremely grateful to Sunny Varkey for supporting Dubai Cares and pledging AED100 million over 10 years as part of his commitment to making a difference to the lives of children in developing countries. Providing education to these children will provide them an opportunity to improve their own lives and make positive contributions to their communities.”
Citing the findings of a UNICEF report, “Some 104 million children worldwide receive no education at all” Sunny Varkey, Chairman of the Varkey Group, GEMS Education and Welcare World Health Systems added, “His Highness has always said that Education is the only real and tangible way to eradicate poverty so providing this generation with the skills for economic self sufficiency will have a long term impact in communities around the world”.
Mr. Varkey said, “I believe that a person who has been educated will also understand the importance of educating their own children so the impact of a quality education will flow through from generation to generation. For almost 50 years we have provided quality education to Dubai and the surrounding region and it gives me immense pleasure to support Dubai Cares and their education programs.”
Since 2007, Dubai Cares continues to reach out to more than four million children in 21 countries through various development programs related to primary education.
