Dubai Women’s College (DWC) recently participated in the Fourth Annual World Math Day. Hamda Atiq Ahmed Yousuf Al Hammadi and Noura Mohammed Mahmoud Hassan, DWC’s Foundation students who took part in the competition, together collected 9687 points and both received a gold certificate.
The World Math Day is an annual international competition in which students log in and take part by answering math questions online. This year 88 foundations’ students participated, gained 26,558 points. They were part of the total of 1,133,246 students from 56,082 schools and 235 countries, who this year set a new world record by correctly answering 479,732,613 questions.
World Math Day 2010 featured an exciting new format with multiple skill levels for all age groups. Participants could play in up to 500 games in the online competition. The World Champion in each category received a "Minted Gold Medal;" and all participants received certificates for taking part.
Laura Sarbu, DWC Math Faculty and Team Leader said, “World Math Day has become a tradition at DWC and our students found the experience very rewarding. We are pleased with this year results and hope to achieve similar results next year”.
Hamda Atiq, was very excited for winning commenting, “I enjoyed the game because l used my Math abilities, learnt more about the subject and received a gold certificate. I am so happy I represented DWC in an international event!”
Rosendo Angeles, DWC Math Faculty, who organized the event, commented that World Math Day gives students an opportunity to develop their skills in mental calculations in a friendly and fun competition between fellow students around the globe and makes Math fun to learn.
