Egypt Arrested 36 Alleged Muslim Brotherhood Members Before Elections
Egyptian judicial sources have revealed that 36 alleged members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood were arrested before Shura Council elections on Wednesday, according to Al Jazeera satellite channel.
A spokesman for the group, Ma’moun Hudhaibi, was quoted by the station on Wednesday as saying that nine other members of his movement were arrested on Tuesday, but the judicial sources did not confirm his allegation.
They said that the detainees were accused of attempting to reactivate the organization, which by represented with 17 members in parliament, who won the seats as independents last November.
Last month, three candidates for the Shura Council, which serves as an upper house with no legislative power, were apprehended while on their way separately to register their candidacies.
The first stage of the elections took place on Wednesday, with 30 seats contested in eight governorates – Albawaba.com
