Egypt: Tantawi to keep defense portfolio in next government
Egypt's military junta revealed that its chief Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi will hold the defense portfolio in the next government, stressing that it won't retreat from the constitutional declaration issued two weeks ago. Major General Mohammed al-Assar, a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), confirmed ina TV interview that the President of the Council, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, will take over the defense portfolio in the next government.
Assar stressed that SCAF would hand over power to President-elect Mohamed Morsi on the 30th of June. but he stressed that SCAF will be transfer the legislative powers to the parliament just after its election. Maj. Gen. Assar noted that Mursi has the right to determine the form and manner of swearing to take over his new position.
For his part, Maj. Gen. Mahmoud Higazi, a member of the SCAF, said talk of A possible withdrawal of the recent constitutional declaration is out of the question, asserting that the declaration will remain until a new constitution is in place.
